Administration Building
-
This structure was built in 1892. The district sold it in 1960 to a business school. The old city library (which also no longer exists) and a parking lot later occupied this site. Temporary district administrative offices were set up in East Side Junior High School until the current Administration Building at 810 West Markham Street was completed in 1964. The building sustained damage from an explosion during the 1957 Central High School desegregation crisis when 12 sticks of dynamite were detonated near the south wall. Nuns from a nearby convent were able to give the FBI a description of the bomber's car, and he was captured.
Employees moved into the new Administration Building in December 1964. The Board of Education held an Open House there on May 15, 1966.
