Following back-to-back successful campaigns, LRSD continues its One District One Book reading effort. Through One District One Book, all 13,000 elementary students simultaneously read the same book. Community partners pitch in to purchase the books. Families are encouraged to read the books together at home. While at school, students enjoy participating in chapter-themed projects, science experiments and other related activities. This year’s book is The One and Only Ivan –told through the title character, a gorilla who lives at a shopping mall. Sponsors include the Little Rock Zoo, Southwest Power Pool, Arvest Bank, Rotary Club 99 and Economics Arkansas. A special zoo day connected to the campaign was hosted in November for LRSD families. Additional dates will be shared on the District website and social media about upcoming One District One Book events.
- New this year, as students read The One and Only Ivan, they will participate in challenges that include receiving electronic clues to solve problems in a virtual escape room, and have the opportunity to win prizes. Supt. Mike Poore has issued the first challenge:
- Challenge 1
Students are requested to read the first chapter with their parent/guardian, then post a photo of themselves reading with their parent/guardian on the school's social media sites, using hashtags #LRSD1District1Book and #LRSDPowerofUS

One District One Book 2019
Hello, Parents:
We thank you for your continued support of LRSD’s One District One Book reading efforts, and most importantly – your support of our wonderful students. But, we’re not going to let a little soggy weather “rain” on our enthusiasm. There are always reasons to celebrate #LRSDPowerofUS! Keep posting those great photos and videos from activities related to the Toothpaste Millionaire, using hashtag #LRSD1District1BookTM.
Meantime, here are cute videos from Booker Arts Magnet students, reminding us what this work is all about! Enjoy!

Thirteen-thousand elementary school students have wrapped up reading their 6th book in a targeted literacy/reading focus by the Little Rock School District as part of LRSD's One District One Book Campaign. All elementary campuses participated in the simultaneous launch of the spring reading effort on April 12th. In addition to encouraging family reading, the campaign also teaches financial literacy.
Since beginning the One District One Book effort in conjunction with the national organization, Read to Them in 2017, LRSD students have read the Lemonade War, The World According to Humphrey, Cleo Edison Oliver - Playground Millionaire, Frank Einstein and the Electro Fingers, and Zoey and Sassafras - Marshmallows and Dragons. Students are provided books and materials free of charge thanks to generous community partners. Sponsors for the 2019 campaign include Rotary Club 99, First Security Bank, Bank Ozk, Economics Arkansas, Delta Dental and the Clinton Center.
Celebrity readers were enlisted to introduce each chapter of the book with prerecorded videos that are posted to LRSD's website. The videos were uploaded as students began new chapters. Among the guest readers this year are Governor Asa Hutchinson and First Lady Susan Hutchinson, Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., and CEOs from campaign sponsors.
Family guides were created to support the campaign and are posted to the District's website, along with Spanish audio versions of the book. Families were also invited to share videos/photos of their time reading together on social media using the hashtag #LRSD1District1BookTM (TM - Toothpaste Millionaire). Students created skits and musical performances tied to the book that were also shared on social media.
As a result of the District's intense reading focus, LRSD was named the 2018 One District One Book Award recipient. LRSD’s efforts are also being used as a model across the country, including districts here in Arkansas.
