STUDENTS EXPLORE THE WORLD AT GIBBS! They learn about other nations and cultures through the study of geography and the universals of culture. Each classroom represents a nation which the students study and compare to the United States. An Ambassador from each classroom nation participates in the Gibbs Mini United Nations complete with an elected fifth grade Secretary General. The Mini UN sponsors service projects, an International Food Day Cereal Drive, a Giving Tree non-perishable food drive, and an Earth Day Awareness Parade. An annual school-wide cultural theme connects all the classrooms across the curriculum. The theme for the 2022-2023 Theme is Once Upon A Time at Gibbs: Exploring world cultures through Folktales, Folk Dance and Folk Art.
The school mascot is the endangered Snow Leopard. The school colors are blue and green, the colors of Earth from space.
All classroom teachers and specialists (art, foreign languages, gifted, international studies, library, music, and physical education) teach the cultural theme across the curriculum. During international studies classes, especially in grades two through five, students are learning about the geography and cultural beliefs of their class nations. There are two international studies classes per week in each 2nd through 5th grade classroom.
Each classroom at Gibbs represents a different nation in the world: Australia, the Philippines, Kenya, Nigeria, Japan, South Korea, Tunisia, Egypt, Brazil, Haiti, Ireland, and the Czech Republic. Each classroom has an Ambassador that represents that class nation in the Gibbs Mini United Nations. There is even an elected 5th grade Secretary General. The Mini UN gives direction to student efforts for peacekeeping, human rights awareness, and environmental awareness. Ambassadors in the Gibbs Mini United Nations vote annually to sponsor the following service projects: Pinwheels for Peace, World Food Day Cereal Drive, International Education Week, Giving Tree Food Drive, Earth Day Parade, and Rock for Peace.
The school-wide culminating activities each May are:
(1) the International Fest sponsored by the Gibbs P.T.A. on the first Friday in May
(2) 5th Grade Musical Production,
(3) special field trips: 4th grade to Heifer Ranch and Development Center in Perryville and 5th grade to a special field trip destination
